NO APOLOGY... PSALM SAM IS GAY
After exhausting all her fingers, my eight year old pupil continued the counting on her toes. She looked up at me and muttered with conviction that belied her age “FOURTEEN YEARS IN PRISON” I was alarmed, not only did she knows the meaning of the word but she knows the punishment associated with it in Nigeria. “After that?” I tried to look as nonchalant as much as I could.
“I will fire you”
“For being gay?”
“Yes!” She went on to narrate all she had been told about gays. How they were more evil than boko haram and how they are on the top of the rankings of the bad people in Nigeria. I did not try to dispute it after all our government agreed with her by quickly enacting a law which bare same sex marriage but the same government cannot enact a life imprisonment or even death sentence for politicians that are killing the nation with their kleptomaniac habits or even one for numerous killer gangs that daily hunt our land maiming and killing at will.
I looked at my pupils result again, (It was what actually led to the discussion about gay or no gay. Her performance was beyond my expectation.) “Once again I muttered, “ I am gay”. I could see the eagerness in her face, I know if I don’t explain the riddle to her she would run to her mum to inform her. The same also applies to so many people…
“gay is another word for happiness… so while there is another meaning for gay, mine is to say am so happy to have a home lesson pupil who scored hundred percent in mathematics and English Language and also in most of her subjects.” A look of relief flooded her face and I saw a sweat dropped from her forehead.
Sorry to disappoint you guys, am gay and no apology for that.
